Baldur's Gate 3 on Switch 2? Larian Wanted It, But Couldn't Make It Happen
So, it turns out that Larian Studios, the folks behind the incredible Baldur's Gate 3, were actually keen on bringing the game to the Switch 2. I was surprised to read that during a recent Reddit AMA, Swen Vincke, the studio head, dropped this little nugget of information. Apparently, the decision wasn't theirs to make. It makes you wonder what went down behind the scenes.
When asked about the possibility of seeing Baldur's Gate 3 on Nintendo's upcoming console, Vincke simply stated, "We would have loved to but it wasn't our decision to make." Ouch! I can only imagine the disappointment from fans who were hoping to experience the game on the go. One user even commented how bummed they were, especially if Larian wanted to do it but were somehow not greenlit by the publisher. I'm betting licensing issues played a big part in the decision, even though Vincke didn't get into specifics.
However, it's not all doom and gloom! While Baldur's Gate 3 on Switch 2 seems unlikely, there's a glimmer of hope for Larian's next project, Divinity. During the same AMA, Larian's technical director mentioned that they'd just released Divinity Original Sin 2 on the Switch and that they "love the platform." That's definitely encouraging! They even assured everyone that they'd keep the Switch 2 in mind for Divinity, which was announced during The Game Awards with a pretty intense trailer, I might add.
And it doesn't stop there. Larian is also committed to making sure Divinity runs smoothly on the Steam Deck. Since Baldur's Gate 3 was a huge hit on the platform, they're aiming to do their "best" to get Divinity working well on it too. That's great news for us PC gamers who love playing on the go. To be honest, I'm really excited to see what Larian does with Divinity. If it's anything like their previous games, we're in for a treat.
