Bloodborne Remake: Bluepoint Games Pitch Rejected by Sony
So, here's the scoop: Bluepoint Games, the wizards behind the Demon’s Souls and Shadow of the Colossus remakes, apparently pitched a Bloodborne remake to Sony back in early 2025. Can you imagine how awesome that would've been?
However, Sony said no. According to reports, even though the numbers looked good, FromSoftware, the original creators of Bloodborne, weren't keen on letting someone else take the reins. It's like when you've got a favorite recipe, and you're a bit hesitant to let anyone else try to cook it!
There's this theory floating around, and it makes a lot of sense: Shuhei Yoshida, who used to be a big shot at Sony, thinks that Hidetaka Miyazaki, the president of FromSoftware, has a special place in his heart for Bloodborne. Apparently, Miyazaki is so busy with his own projects that he can't do a remake himself, but he also doesn't want anyone else messing with his masterpiece. If that's the case, I can understand that.
Miyazaki's Perspective
Interestingly, Miyazaki mentioned in an interview that he hadn't even played the Demon’s Souls remake. He said that he generally avoids playing his old games because it brings up too many memories and emotions. However, he was happy that the remake brought a fresh look to the game and introduced it to a new generation of players.
In fact, he said he was excited to see Bluepoint Games add things they didn't consider back in the day when they were developing the original game, like new techniques and visuals. It's interesting how different developers can bring new perspectives to something you've already created.
Outside of Bluepoint Games, some other studios also wanted to work on Bloodborne!. Brandon Sheffield, who is the director at Necrosoft Games, said that his studio has also pitched to Sony a Bloodborne project. He said its unlikely that a new Bloodborne game will come out if FromSoftware doesn't want to do it.
Bluepoint's struggles
But that Bloodborne pitch is only a piece of a bigger situation regarding Bluepoint Games’ closure. After Sony acquired them, Bluepoint helped Santa Monica Studio with God of War Ragnarok. It was after 2022 that they started to work on a live-service game based on the God of War world, where Atreus falls into Hades. The idea was to have players control multiple versions of Atreus as they battled through Greek hell, with ongoing support and cooperative gameplay, however the project was very volatile.
As Bloomberg says, the studio struggled with the live-service game, because they were a small team mainly with art and engineering skills, instead of design skills. Also, some of the staff wanted to work on a traditional game instead. Sony canceled the God of War live-service project in January 2025 after years of a difficult development, even with Santa Monica Studio's help.
It was after this situation that Bluepoint Games pitched a remake of Bloodborne. After that was rejected, Bluepoint also proposed an updated version of Shadow of the Colossus. By February 2026, Bluepoint Games was without projects for over a year. After Sony's announcement about remaking the original God of War trilogy on February 12, some employees got worried. And just one week after, the shutdown of the studio was announced.
Because of this, Sony didn't think Bluepoint Games was able to make its own games, and couldn't find a good partnership. Right now, the studio's former staff are looking for jobs, even inside Sony Interactive Entertainment, while other companies are trying to find a way to salvage the studio. Even though it is unlikely.
