Spell Crafting

Craft Custom Spells in Oblivion Remastered: A Comprehensive Guide

RPG

While Oblivion Remastered provides a basic set of spells to start your journey, you'll soon discover the need for more specialized magic. Fortunately, the game allows you to craft your own spells, tailoring them to your specific needs and playstyle.

Unlocking the Ability to Craft Spells

The ability to craft spells isn't immediately available. You must first earn the rank of Apprentice within the Mages Guild. This involves obtaining recommendations from all seven local Mage Guilds located in the major cities of Cyrodiil.

Once you have all seven recommendations, head to the Imperial City and enter the Arcane University, found on the southeastern side. Locate the Arch-Mage’s Quarters and speak with Raminus Polus. Present your recommendations, and he will grant you the Apprentice rank.

The Altar of Spellmaking

After becoming an Apprentice, exit the Arch-Mage’s Quarters and head to the Praxographical Center, situated southeast of your previous location. Inside, you'll find the Altar of Spellmaking in the back left corner of the room. Interact with it to begin crafting your own spells.

Using the Altar of Spellmaking

The Altar of Spellmaking presents two menus. The left side displays a list of all the magical effects your character knows. The right side is where you assemble your custom spell by adding and modifying effects.

Select an effect from the left side to add it to your spell. Once added, you can adjust several properties:

  • Range: Determines the spell's target – Touch, Target, or Self.
  • Magnitude: Sets the spell's overall strength or damage.
  • Area: Defines the area of effect for the spell.
  • Duration: Controls how long the spell lasts.

The magicka cost and the gold cost to create the spell are displayed at the bottom. Increasing the magnitude, area, or duration will raise both costs. Be mindful of your gold reserves, as they can be limited.

Click "Confirm" to add the effect to your spell. You can add multiple effects, but some require a certain skill level. For example, Restore Health spells require a Restoration skill of 50. If your skill is too low, a red notice will appear.

Creating Your Spell

Once you've selected and modified all desired effects, click the "Create" button. Your new spell will be added to your spellbook, ready to be cast as long as you have sufficient magicka.
