Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is coming! Prepare for a feels trip to Night City
Hey choombas! If you loved the first Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime on Netflix, get hyped! CD Projekt Red just announced that Edgerunners 2 is officially in production, and it's gonna be another standalone story set in the wild, neon-drenched streets of Night City.
Studio Trigger is back on board, with Kai Ikarashi taking the director's chair and Bartosz Sztybor juggling writing, showrunning, and producing duties. This means we're likely in for more of that incredible animation style and gripping storytelling we loved from the first series.
Now, before I get too far, here's your spoiler warning for the first Edgerunners! If you haven't seen it yet, go watch it now, then come back here.
While there's no release date yet, CD Projekt Red did say it's coming to Netflix "in the future." Not super helpful, I know, but at least we know it's happening! They did drop a teaser, though, which makes it pretty clear that our main man from the first series, David, is definitely gone. "David is dead," it declares, "but Night City lives on." Talk about bittersweet!
Sztybor also teased that we can expect "a raw, real chronicle of redemption and revenge, something unlike what we’ve done before." If that doesn't get your chrome pumping, I don't know what will!
If you're hoping for a less feels-trip-y experience this time around, I have some bad news. Sztybor also warned everyone to "be prepared for sadness." Remember how the first series left you feeling like you'd just gone 12 rounds with Mike Tyson? Yeah, get ready for something like that again. Maybe grab some tissues now.
Apparently, during the panel where they announced Edgerunners 2, Sztybor shared some thoughts on creating human stories in dystopian settings. And let me tell you, it was...something. He said, "We're the company from Poland. I'm from Poland. People in Poland are sad. They are born sad, they die sad, so I just wanted to make the whole world sad...when people are sad, I'm a bit happy."
So there you have it! Start prepping your emotions, and maybe think about diving back into Cyberpunk 2077 for your five-thousandth playthrough while we wait for Edgerunners 2. It's gonna be a wild ride!
