Final Fantasy 7 Remake on Switch 2 uses game key, eating a third of storage
So, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is heading to the Switch 2, which is pretty cool! However, there's a catch. Instead of a traditional game cartridge, it's coming as a "game key card." This means you're basically buying a key to download the whole game.
Now, you might be wondering what the big deal is. Well, it turns out that FF7 Remake will hog up a whopping 90GB of space. Considering the Switch 2 is rumored to have only 256GB of storage, that's more than a third of your space gone. Of course, that space includes system files, so there will be even less space left.
Why the Game Key Card?
Apparently, the max size for a regular game card is 64GB. So, companies like Square Enix are using these game key cards so they can offer bigger games. But it is also important to consider the performance on the new console. Like a Ubisoft developer stated, some games can't give the "performance we needed at the quality target we were going for" if they are in traditional cards.
I get that Nintendo probably doesn't want to make bigger, more expensive cards. And maybe Square Enix couldn't shrink the game down more. However, it is important to keep in mind that we may need to get MicroSD Express cards if we want to play all those AAA games on the Switch 2.
Square Enix also said that the whole FF7 Remake trilogy is coming to Switch 2! If Rebirth is already 145GB on PS5, you're definitely going to need that extra storage if you want to have all three games on your console.
