G-Rebels: Cyberpunk Flight Combat Sim Inspired by G-Police Takes Off!
Okay, so, I had a moment when I saw that G-Rebels, this upcoming cyberpunk flight combat sim, is taking cues from G-Police. Now, if you haven't heard of G-Police, you're in for a treat. Seriously, it's one of the best videogames ever. I was obsessed with it, so much so that I might've scared the neighborhood kid! Point is, the game was and still is great.
There is always someone saying that I am difficult to please when it comes to games. Well, I'm here to tell you why I'm excited about G-Rebels. I really liked G-Police when I was younger, and I'm pretty sure I acted like a weirdo because of it.
G-Police has you playing as a cop in a futuristic hovercopter. You end up fighting evil corporations. The game shines because of its setting - cities inside domes with traffic and holographic ads. Okay, the draw distance wasn't great, but it added to the whole dark, cyberpunk feel. I can't stand people who want a remake, but I understand them!
What got me hooked on the G-Rebels demo was how it felt to fly around. Even though it's set on Earth now, this dystopian Earth feels alive. Soaring through the city, dodging bridges, it's like being back in G-Police. The city looks amazing, almost like Coruscant from Star Wars, with skyscrapers reaching into the clouds and ads playing as you zoom by.
Open World Freedom
While G-Police was mission-based, G-Rebels is going for an open-world style. You start as a cop, but you can become a bounty hunter, a racer, or even a pirate. Will we get to be a rebel, too? The story hints at some choices about who you're fighting for.
I can't really say how it plays as a dogfighting game, since I crashed and burned pretty quickly in my first fight. However, the controls feel solid, which gives me hope for some intense air battles.
Here's where it gets a little weird: the developers are using AI for some things. They're using it for some voiceovers and for translating the game's text. I'm hoping they rethink this for the full release, which should be out sometime this year.
