Nexon Secures Rights to Develop New StarCraft Game with Blizzard

Strategy

The StarCraft universe may be making a comeback! After a period of relative silence since StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm, it appears Nexon has secured the rights to develop new content based on the popular franchise, in collaboration with Blizzard.

According to reports, Nexon emerged victorious in a bidding war against other major Korean gaming companies, including NC Soft and Netmarble, for the rights to create new games within the StarCraft IP. Nexon also secured service rights to Overwatch Mobile in Japan and Korea.

This acquisition opens exciting possibilities for the future of StarCraft. Interestingly, there's no genre restriction, meaning Nexon has the freedom to explore new directions and potentially create something entirely different from the traditional real-time strategy (RTS) gameplay.

StarCraft's Legacy in Korea

StarCraft holds a special place in the hearts of Korean gamers. The original RTS title sparked the birth of a thriving esports scene and remains popular even today with StarCraft: Brood War. Korea is undoubtedly a central hub for StarCraft enthusiasm.

Nexon's Diverse Portfolio

Nexon, known for titles like MapleStory and Blue Archive, boasts a diverse portfolio across various genres. While Blue Archive isn't a traditional RTS, its strategic elements might influence Nexon's approach to future StarCraft projects, should they choose to stick to the franchise's RTS roots.

The possibilities are vast, and it will be interesting to see what Nexon brings to the StarCraft universe.
