Venture into Perilous Planets: Klei Unveils Away Team, a New Base-Building Adventure
The creators of Invisible Inc. and Don't Starve, Klei Interactive, just dropped a bomb: Away Team, a fresh 2D base-building game set in the Oxygen Not Included universe, is coming! Even though I haven't personally dived into Oxygen Not Included yet, Klei's track record speaks for itself – Mark Of The Ninja is still one of my all-time favorite stealth games. Consequently, Away Team immediately grabs my attention, especially with its wicked focus on physics-based treachery.
Imagine a world where "every tile is simulated." Away Team isn't just making comparisons to Noita; it's actually expanding on the chaotic groundwork laid by Oxygen Not Included. It’s like a playground for emergent engineering disasters, where every playthrough is a completely unique challenge because of the sheer number of interacting physical properties.
In Away Team, you're a lone Oxygen Not Included colonist – a Duplicant – who accidentally launches themselves to an uncharted planet. Armed with a vacuum gun, your mission is to delve into the unknown and construct your own base using scavenged materials. You'll need to secure food, manage oxygen levels, understand conductivity, and develop some seriously precise aiming skills.
This isn't your typical walk in the park. Every substance abides by the laws of thermodynamics. Liquids flow and evaporate, and fires spread if they find flammable fuel. Things were never this volatile in Star Trek away missions! However, I would binge-watch a show where Captain Picard spends an entire episode carefully constructing acid vats, only to utter a frustrated "Oh, shoot!" right before the credits roll.
Away Team doesn't have a release date yet, but you can already wishlist it on Steam.
