Virtuos Hit by Layoffs: What's Next for Oblivion Remastered?
Hey everyone, I've got some news that isn't exactly sunshine and rainbows. Virtuos, the studio that brought us the awesome Oblivion Remastered and has been helping out on big titles like the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 update and Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, is reportedly going through a rough patch. I know, it's a bummer to hear, especially when they've been involved in so many cool projects.
According to reports, Virtuos is restructuring, and unfortunately, that means layoffs. They're saying it's affecting around seven percent of their staff, which is roughly 300 people. That's a lot of talented folks! Apparently, these cuts are hitting teams that aren't as busy or are in areas where demand is slowing down. It's a tough situation, no doubt.
From what I'm hearing, these layoffs are happening across the globe – in Asia, Europe, and even in France. The good news is that the team working on Oblivion Remastered in France seems to be mostly safe, with fewer than 10 people affected. That's a relief! Virtuos has stated that they're providing separation packages and career assistance to those who are leaving, which is at least some comfort. They're also trying to find new roles for people within their global network, which is a decent move.
Reportedly, there was a strike happening at Virtuos Lyon to protest the layoffs and try to protect the branch's future.
One interesting tidbit is that Virtuos seems to be moving towards using generative AI more. Apparently, they've gone from just talking about it to actually training employees on it. It will be interesting to see how this trend affects game development in the future, and whether it leads to more efficiencies or more job displacement. It's a double-edged sword, for sure.
This news comes at a time when the gaming industry has already seen a lot of layoffs. It's definitely a worrying trend, and I hope things start to stabilize soon. Layoffs are never good, and they impact real people with families and dreams.
Virtuos has reassured everyone that they're still committed to their partnerships and projects, including Oblivion Remastered, Cyberpunk 2077, and Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. Let's hope they can weather this storm and continue to deliver awesome games!
